Vitamin C and Joint Pain go Together

Vitamin C and Joint PainBecause vitamin C is a water-soluble supplement, it does not remain in your body and must be received either through your diet or through an actual oral vitamin.  Experiencing joint pain is an unwanted issue that many individuals deal with on a daily basis, and can typically be a result of a vitamin C deficiency.   You may require additional supplements, which you can discuss with your healthcare provider to find an effective way of getting the necessary amount of vitamin C your body needs.

In order for your body to properly make and maintain collagen, vitamin C is a must in your body.  What happens, over time, cartilage and connective tissues begin to break down within the joints, causing pain and increases the risk of fracturing and breaking of the bones.  The more vitamin C you take in, the less pain your body will experience simply due to the rebuilding of collagen.

How Much Vitamin C Should You Take?

The recommended amount of vitamin C that you should take daily is 90 mg for men and 75 mg for women.  For women however, during pregnancy it is recommended that you increase your dosage to 85 mg.  As you begin to breastfeed, your body requires more nutrition and the dosage for vitamin C during this time increases to 120 mg a day.

The downside to ingesting vitamin C is the risk of ingesting too much of it.  According to a study performed by Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, very high levels of vitamin C can trigger a protein that actually causes bone spurs.  It also can accelerate any joint damage and pain in those who already are experiencing osteoarthritis.  Another study performed in Great Britain found that individuals who have low levels of vitamin C are three times more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis than those whose diets include foods that include a significant amount of vitamin C.

So what is the verdict?  How much vitamin C is too much and when do you know that your body has had enough or is in need of more?  This is a question that you can discuss with your healthcare provider to discover the right amount of vitamin C that your body needs.  It goes without saying that vitamin C is very beneficial to the body; for joint pain, to boost the immune system and to be taken as a daily supplement for overall health and well being.  Try to keep a good balance of vitamin C rich foods in your diet and supplement with a doctor-approved supplement.
